About Mazda RX-7

As one of the few classic sports cars to come from Japan, Mazda RX-7 was built by a prominent Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer Mazda Motor Corporation, commonly referred to as simply Mazda, between 1978 and 2002 as a sports car. Originally introduced to replace the Mazda RX-3, "R" in RX-7 means it has a twin-rotor Rotary engine. Having made Car and Driver Magazine's Ten Best List five times, having won many awards such as Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year, Playboy's Car of the Year and so on, the RX-7 was discontinued after being manufactured for three generations in the 1995 model year for North American market and was replaced by the Mazda RX-8.
The second-generation Mazda RX-7 (FC) was produced from 1985 to 1992 and debuted for the 1986 model year. It was offered in two body styles, 2-door coupe and 2-door convertible and S4 came in Sport, GXL, GTU and Turbo II, Convertible trim levels while S5 came in GXL, GTUs, Turbo and Convertible. But RX-7 also introduced a 10th Anniversary in 1988. During this generation, the RX-7 was powered by a 1.3 L turbocharged engine rated at 182 horsepower and power was sent through a 5-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. The more recent RX-7 (FD) was introduced for the 1993 model year as a 2-door coupe. It added many high-performance features, including a limited-slip differential, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and tuned suspension for the track and came standard with the driver airbag and ABS. Back then, RX-7 got power from a 1.3 L twin-turbocharged rotary engine that put out 255 horsepower and 217 pound-feet of torque and this engine was mounted to the 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda RX-7 Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Boasting sleek styling, unique rotary engine, affordable price and exhilarating performance, Mazda RX-7 has always been one of the best-handling affordable sports cars. But since the North American version of RX-7 is now at least twenty-two years old, please be prepared for these common problems in advance:
First, engine turns over but won't start and overheating are what Mazda RX-7 drivers meet most during driving. If you know something about the working principles of the automobiles, then you may have realized that they are caused by engine failure. This problem is always serious enough to bring a breakdown of the vehicle and you had better diagnose and solve it before it is too late. Experienced RX-7 drivers suggest that when the engine starts to make strange noises such as whining, squealing or rattling or the cooling system starts to leak coolant, you need to be alert. Soon, the engine will run roughly, misfire, stall and even have starting problems. The cooling system failure causes overheating and speeds up the engine failure. Therefore, once both the Low Coolant Light and Check Engine Light are illuminated, please inspect the working condition of the RX-7 radiator, starter, head gasket, water pump, intake manifold gasket, fuel pump, coolant reservoir, cooling hose, oil filter, air filter, engine control module and valve cover gasket immediately.
Second, for Mazda RX-7 drivers, another horrible and common problem is the braking failure, which is often the culprit of many fatal accidents. The working condition of the braking system often decides if you can reach the destination safely or not. Thus, professional RX-7 drivers said once the brakes become noisy, the braking fluids start to leak, and the brake pedal pulsates, you need to know something is wrong with the braking system. Gradually, the rear brakes will be locked up on the wet surfaces and the parking brake could not hold the car properly. The lit Brake Warning Light and Parking Brake Light are the most obvious signs for you to inspect the RX-7 brake caliper, brake pad set, brake disc, brake drum, brake rotors, brake line, brake proportioning valve and parking brake cable thoroughly.
Moreover, please perform routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts of Mazda RX-7. Some parts including RX-7 seat belt, windshield wiper, wiper blade, cabin air filter, antenna, fog light and headlight need to be maintained routinely for a prime condition.
