About Mazda MX-6

Being mechanically identical to the Mazda 626 and Ford Probe, Mazda MX-6 was built by a prominent Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer Mazda Motor Corporation, commonly referred to as simply Mazda, between 1988 and 1997 as a sports car. Originally introduced as the replacement for the Mazda 626 coupe, MX-6 had been available for about two generations covering ten model years before being discontinued.
The first-generation Mazda MX-6 was produced from 1987 to 1992 and debuted for the 1988 model year. Built based on the Mazda GD platform, MX-6 was offered in only one body style, 2-door coupe and came in four trim levels, DX, LX, LE (Leather Edition) and GT. Coming with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, optional electric moonroof, leather surfaces, a leather-wrapped shift knob, four-wheel disc brakes with optional ABS, three-way electronically adjustable suspension and a special four-wheel steering 4WS. During this generation, MX-6 was powered by a 2.2 L I4 rated at 110-145 horsepower and power was sent through either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission to the front wheels. The more recent MX-6 (GE) was unveiled in 1991 as A-spec in the United States market for the 1993 model year. It then was offered in base RS, luxury LS, and LS M-edition. Equipped with alloy wheels, a low rear spoiler, an optional CD player, fog lights, leather or cloth interior, twin airbags and others, MX-6 then got power from 2.0 L I4 making 118 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque and 2.5 L V6 producing 164 hp and 160 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were mated to 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.

Mazda MX-6 Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Offering timeless sheet metal, comfortable interior, great road feel and spunky engine, Mazda MX-6 had won a large group of fans in its days. But now the MX-6 is not a young model anymore and these common problems will inflict it:
First, overheating ranks first among all other problems on Mazda MX-6 and it is the typical symptom of the cooling system failure. But this problem does not get enough attention although it could be the inducement of engine failure. The seriousness of the engine failure is well-known since it is often regarded as the omen of the vehicle breaking down. Professional MX-6 repairmen warn that once the cooling system starts to leak coolants, you need to be alert. Soon, the engine performance will decrease because of overheating and high operating temperature. It may misfire, stall and suffer from the starting issues and the vehicle experiences a decrease in power, acceleration and fuel efficiency. Once both Low Coolant Light and Check Engine Light are activated, please inspect the MX-6 head gasket, water pump, valve cover gasket, radiator, intake manifold gasket, fuel pump, coolant reservoir, cooling hose, oil filter, air filter, and engine control module thoroughly.
Second, for Mazda MX-6 drivers, the suspension failure is another disaster as it seems to appear out of the blue. Most drivers have not enough knowledge about the working principles of the automobiles and even they have, most of them tend to underestimate this problem. In fact, experienced MX-6 drivers told it could not only bring unsteady and uncomfortable driving experience, fatal accidents may also be in store. Clunking or grinding noises from underneath the vehicle cause uneven and excessive tire wear, which in return lead to tilting vehicle. And finally, you lose control of the vehicle due to intense car vibration, unintentional steering, poorly operated steering wheel and tilting wheel. To avoid these horrible symptoms, please keep the MX-6 shock absorber, wheel bearing, control arm bushing, coil springs, coil spring insulator, sway bar bushing and drive shaft in good condition always.
Moreover, the role of routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts of Mazda MX-6 should never be ignored. Parts including MX-6 seat belt, windshield wiper, wiper blade, cabin air filter, antenna, fog light and headlight could sustain their prime condition only through being maintained routinely. So, add them to your routine maintenance list.
